I tried celery juice for 10 days and here's what happened.
Jumping on the Celery Juice bandwagon- was it a good idea?
When I got bored with my usual morning green juice, I decided to experiment a little and jumped on the celery juice bandwagon. You'll often find people online raving about the benefits of celery juice and how it's miraculously cured some of their acne and skin issues. Well, here's the bitter truth of how my experience went. (pun intended)
Before we get started, here are some of the benefits and claims of drinking celery juice:
- Celery, known for its powerful antioxidant characteristics is one of the most healing juices. Fresh celery provides a source of vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, folate, manganese, calcium, riboflavin, magnesium, and vitamin B6.
- There are claims that it has the ability to treat certain conditions, like IBS or cystic acne and in removing free radicals from the body.
- Prevents constipation, inflammation; detoxifies the liver, promotes healthy skin and aids in weight loss.

Celery leaves and stalk. |
Day 1 -
Took two large fleshy stalks, some leaves and water; blended them together and poured the juice, pulp and all into a glass. Now you can strain it but the nutrients are all in the pulp, plus the goodness of fibre right?
Right off the bat, you can smell the pungent celery piercing through. So I closed my eyes and nostrils and chugged it down. One gulp into it and my gag reflex was activated. Besides the obvious taste of celery, there comes a slight bitterness to it. This I read was due to the leaves. Powered through and finished the rest of it.
I was a lot more observant of any rejection by my stomach and body throughout the day but was pleasantly surprised.

Ready to be blended. |
Day 2-
Decided to skip out on the leaves to see if the bitterness reduces and it definitely did. Again like day one, it did not go down smoothly but in the name of good health, I chugged the rest of it down. What stood out the most was the slight saltiness of the drink. (More research shows it has a high salt content)
From other reviews, celery juice apparently makes one frequent the loo and this was what I anticipated but strangely, no. Nothing out of the ordinary with my bowel movements at least.

Day 3-
It was getting easier to swallow the drink now without having to cringe and hold my nose. Threw in a couple of leaves to get the most out of it.
One reviewer said it helps balance your blood sugar levels, but I still craved for something sweet (no, I did not give in)
Day 4 to 9 -
Although my pallet was getting accustomed to the taste of the drink, my body however didn't appreciate it so much.
My wishful thinking hoped to see some dramatic effects of it on my skin but was quite disappointed. In fact, I felt my skin seemed more breakout-prone than when I was on my previous green morning juice. (more about this juice in the upcoming posts)
As for my large intestine, there was something strange going on, it was doing the opposite of a laxative. (If you must know, my bowel movements returned to normal once I stopped with the juice)
The only positive: my sugar cravings stopped. Was this psychological or celery induced, hard to tell?

Almost done with the drink. (Just like this post haha) |
Day 10-
Didn't think I'd say this when I started off, but am I glad to be done with the trial period!
Did the juice do what most people said it would do? No
What was going on with my large intestine? I still don't know.
Will I try it again? No
Do you get all of its nutrition? No, because nutrients start depleting once the plant is cut.
To sum it up, this was not the miracle juice it's claimed to be and the hype surrounding it is not worth it. (This was my conclusion and your mileage may vary)
There are far more superior greens to add to your morning juice routine, making you feel healthier and get the most out of its nutrients.
